New Clinical Trial to Improve Reading Vision

The Cornea and Laser Eye Institute is excited to announce a new clinical study aimed at reducing the need for reading glasses in patients with presbyopia, an age-related condition. This innovative study uses the VIS Optimal Keratoplasty (Opti-K™), a laser procedure to reshape the cornea and enhance reading vision.

About Opti-K™

VIS Optimal Keratoplasty (Opti-K™) is a minimally invasive continuous-wave thulium fiber laser vision correction procedure developed for adults aged 40 and over. The procedure helps reduce the need for reading glasses by enhancing your ability to read while preserving your ability to see distant objects.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 40 years or older
  • Vision Requirements: Requires reading glasses (not distance glasses)

Why is My Vision Changing?

Presbyopia is a natural condition that affects everyone starting in their 40s. The natural lens inside the eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to see clearly at both distance and near without reading glasses.

How Opti-K™ Works

Opti-K™ uses two concentric rings of laser energy applied outside the visual zone of the eye, delivering mild heat in 16 spots to change the shape of the cornea. The procedure is minimally invasive, with no tissue cutting or removal.

What to Expect

The Opti-K™ procedure is performed on one eye to create monovision, making the treated eye slightly nearsighted while leaving the dominant eye for distance vision. This treatment is not permanent, and a second treatment may be offered 6 months after the initial procedure. Candidates will undergo an evaluation to ensure comfort with simultaneous vision for both reading and distance.

Participation Benefits

  • No Cost: Participants will not be charged for taking part in this study.
