Visual Performance Following LASIK Surgery for Myopia

Interim Report

Purpose
To objective of the study is to evaluate visual performance following LASIK surgery for myopia and myopia with astigmatism. The Refractive Status and Vision Profile (RSVP) questionnaire is an instrument that was developed to assess visual health in patients that require glasses or contact lenses.

Patients and Methods
Eligibility
  • Ages 18-34 years
  • Spherical equivalent refraction of =5.0 D
  • Astigmatism =1.5 D
The RSVP questionnaire was self administered by 72 patients. Changes in total RSVP and RSVP subscales (concern, functioning, driving, symptoms, optical problems, glare, and trouble with corrective lenses) were assessed. Responses were coded to values 1 through 5, 5 indicated the most severe or frequent trouble. The mean of all scores in each subscale were calculated.

Outcome variables included best-corrected spectacle visual acuity, postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and residual spherical equivalent refractive error.

A change of greater than twice the standard error of measurement in total RSVP or subscale scores between pre-operative and post-operative measurements was considered significant. One of the subscales, expectations addressed postoperative tolerance for less-than-perfect vision and was not included in comparison analysis.

Three months after surgery, a significant improvement of in total score was reported. Patients showed improvements in 2 of 7 subscales: concern, and trouble with corrective lenses after surgery. No categories reported significant worsening.

At 6 months postoperatively, a significant improvement in total score compared to preoperative score values. Four subscales recorded improvement, concern, functioning, symptoms and trouble with corrective lenses, and no significant change worsening in any category was noted.

Conclusion
Using traditional outcome measures and the RSVP questionnaire to evaluate visual performance, a substantial number of patients report comparable or improvement in quality of vision following LASIK compared to glasses or contact lenses preoperative.
