Prosthetic Scleral Devices

Scleral Lenses and EyePrintPROTM Prosthetic Scleral Devices and Therapeutic Rehabilitation in Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Disease

For individuals with vision affected by severe ocular surface disease, therapeutic specialty contact lenses, Scleral Lenses, and EyePrintPRO™ Prosthetic Scleral Devices can help improve your quality of life by restoring your vision and ocular comfort, as well as preventing further damage to the ocular surface. These devices are indicated for individuals with the most forms of dry eye and ocular surface diseases. Dr. Gelles works extensively with therapeutic and visually rehabilitative devices and have helped suffering patients from all over the world. By utilizing the most advanced technology and fitting techniques combined with the latest materials and advanced designs, he will determine the device for your individual needs.

These devices are specially designed to rest on the conjunctiva and underlying sclera, the “white” of the eye, and vault over the entire corneal surface. The cornea is one of the most sensitive tissues in the body and the one most damaged by dry eye and ocular surface disease, by vaulting over it and resting on the much less sensitive sclera these devices can provide a relief and protection unseen in traditional treatments. The vaulting creates a space between the cornea and the back surface of the device. This space is filled with fluid and acts as a “tear bandage” which bathes the corneal surface to provide comfort, protection, and healing for people with diseases that affect the ocular surface. This therapeutic use can rehabilitate the cornea and prevent further damage caused by various diseases. Examples include:

Ocular Protection:

  • Neurorophic Keratitis
  • Ocular Surface Disease (Dry Eye)
  • Graft vs Host disease
  • Stevens Johnson Syndrome
  • Ocular Cicitricial Penphigoid
  • Chemical Burns
  • Stem Cell Failure
  • Persistent Corneal Ulcer

Ocular Comfort:

  • Pinguecula
  • Pterygium
  • Scarring
  • Scleral Patch Grafts
  • High Wind/Dust Environments

EyePrintPRO™ Prosthetic Scleral Device

The EyePrintPRO™ is a prosthetic scleral cover shell which improves vision by creating a new, smooth, refractive surface for the eye. The EyePrintPRO™, like a fingerprint, is unique to each individual.

The EyePrintPRO™ is indicated for keratoconus, irregular astigmatism, ocular surface disease (dry eye), trauma, extreme cases of deformed eyes, pellucid marginal degeneration, chemical burns, post surgical corneas (including corneal transplants and post LASIK ectasia), pinguecula, pterygium, stem cell failure, or simply those who desire better vision and comfort.

It starts with the EyePrint Impression Process which only takes minutes and captures the precise curvatures of the entire ocular surface. This comfortable and gentle process gives more information than high tech computerized topographical scanners and gives the ability to fit the most complicated ocular irregularities with precision and provides details of the ocular surface never recognized before when evaluating the eye. There are no fudge factors or guessing.

The EyePrint Impression is shipped to EyePrint Prosthetics LLC for digitizing and prosthetic scleral cover shell design. Through the latest technology in 3D scanning and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining systems, an exact match is achieved to each individual cornea and sclera.

Since the EyePrintPRO™ is manufactured in a high oxygen permeable material with superior quality optics, EyePrintPRO™ wearers have the ultimate in comfort, health and vision.

In many ways, the EyePrintPRO™ is similar to a scleral lens. It is made of the same FDA approved oxygen permeable materials and the fit vaults the cornea while landing on the sclera. There is a long history of the comfort, health and visual benefits of scleral lenses. The difference, however, is in the design process. While scleral lenses are fit through a system of trial and error with prefabricated lenses, The EyePrintPRO™ is made from an impression of the ocular surface, just like a prosthetic eye. Instead of using a series of standardized curvatures as with scleral lenses, the EyePrintPRO™ is generated to exactly match the unique irregularities of the individual eye. Because of the precise nature of the back surface fit, high quality and individualized optics can be placed on the front surface of the device, creating exactly what you need.

Here, you can see how the ocular impression is scanned as part of the making of the Prosthetic Scleral Device and the final Device.

Below is a series of pictures displaying the process.  Impression material is first prepared in the tray.  The impression process is performed in the office by Dr. Gelles.  In the final picture, note the contour of the device is created to exactly match the ocular surface for the most precise possible fit.
