He was joined by colleague's in the field to discuss a number of the latest treatment options for keratoconus, oclar diseases, stell cell therapies and retinal diseases. Dr. Hersh discussed Corneal Collagen Crosslinking & Evolving Management Options for Keratoconus. The event was well received by all who attended.

Dr. Hersh recently returned from Zurich Switzerland where he met with a group of the leading scientists and researchers in collagen crosslinking. Along with basic science discoveries, Amongst the new innovations discussed was topography controlled crosslinking. The procedure will allow crosslinking customized to the shape of the cornea in Keratoconus. Dr. Peter Hersh attended the annual ASCRS Ophthalmology Symposium & Congress, along with CLEI Manager Stacey Lazar, and Bethann Hibbert, our clinical research coordinator. This year's meeting was held at the San Diego Conference Center. (Do you and Bethann have a picture to post?)
Dr. Hersh spoke at the ASCRS Collagen Crosslinking Symposium about "Complications of Corneal Collagen Crosslinking" to a group of ophthalmologists and cornea specialists.
At this year's meeting, there was an announcement of FDA approval of a new procedure for reading vision correction, the KAMRA corneal inlay. Dr. Hersh was a principal investigator and the CLEI team participated in the clinical trials leading to FDA approval. With approval we will be able to offer this procedure for reading vision correction to appropriate candidates. A consultation will be needed to see if this is the best procedure for a patient, but we are excited to begin treatment in the near future.

It was well attended by ophthalmologists, optometrists and vision science researchers; Dr. Chang spoke on "Updates in Hybrid Contact Technology" and "Corneal Collagen Crosslinking in the U.S.: Results from Early Studies".

Dr. Hersh will be attending the annual ASCRS ophthalmology Symposium & Congress, along with 2 staff members. This year's meeting will be held at the Boston Convention Center. Boston is home to his alma mater, Harvard Medical School where he completed both his ophthalmology residency and fellowship in cornea service.
At the Symposium, Dr. Hersh will be giving 6 lectures about CXL to ophthalmologists as well as ophthalmic technicians discussingsurgical techniques, results, and future technology . Being that the ASCRS Annual Symposium is exclusively for the anterior segment specialists, there will be many physicians and staff members in the corneal sub-specialty of ophthalmology discussing treatment options and results.
In addition to Dr. Hersh being in attendance, he understands the importance of learning and encourages the CLEI staff to expand their education. Every year, 2 staff members attend to either keep up with certifications (Certified Ophthalmic Technician or Certified Ophthalmic Associate), attend lectures or be an active participant in the program.

Bogota, Colombia - March 7-8, 2013
Dr. Hersh and a team of eye surgeons visited Bogota, Colombia to perform surgery and review patients treated with a new LASIK procedure. This procedure combines LASIK with corneal collagen crosslinking. While LASIK vision correction surgery reshapes the cornea to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, collagen crosslinking uses a combination of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and ultraviolet light to strengthen the cornea. The team visited Dr. Gustavo Tomayo who has treated many patients with this procedure.

Dr. Chang will share his extensive knowledge of fitting the ClearKone® lens on several types of irregular cornea patients. Strategies for troubleshooting common fitting problems, case studies and tips for simplifying the hybrid fitting process will be discussed. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.
At the most recent international congress on corneal collagen crosslinking, Dr. Hersh presented a paper on the results of the U.S. Corneal Collagen Crosslinking (CXL) clinical trials. Of great interest, he presented the work analyzed by the research team at the CLEI Center for Keratoconus looking at the clinical timecourse of patient outcomes.
